Check-6 Founder Speaks at Barrick Gold Mining's Annual Meeting

By Dana Frawley

Salt Lake City, UT—Check-6 Founder Brian “Bru” Brurud delivered a dynamic keynote speech for Barrick Gold Mining’s annual Corporate and Regional Safety & Health leadership meeting May 14, 2012 at the Downtown Marriott in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Brurud shared his insights into proven practices from military aircraft carrier operations as well as commercial aviation. With his high-energy personal insights and video presentations, Brurud identified how several tragic events in aviation history kick-started performance and safety initiatives into a journey towards zero-incident operations. He showed how these practices transcend aviation and are easily applied to mining: another high-risk industry which also demands a high-reliability operation.
“The presentation was extremely entertaining and the points on having a standardized planning process and a debrief culture were interesting,” shared a Barrick Regional Director of Safety and Health. Others in attendance said “Thanks for sharing your best practices and lessons learned; we think they are applicable to our strategy.”

Barrick Gold Mining is the gold industry leader, with a portfolio of 26 operating mines and advanced exploration and development projects located across five continents. Barrick has the largest reserves in the gold industry, with about 140 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves. The company’s safety theme is “every person going home safe and healthy every day.”
